Making Progress

I FINALLY got my posts imported into WordPress, post to come with how I did it.   So, depending on how you got here you may or may not be seeing the new WordPress site, which is still in progress.  I was about to give up on moving to WordPress when I finally found a solution so barring more serious issues the site will be converted this week.  We also have a ton of giveaways coming this week sponsors including Purex, Hormel and more.  So hopefully everything will come together this week.

Update on updates

Okay so this week has totally sucked.  I've been busy has can be, like leaving the house at 8 am and not getting home until 8 pm, all week long.  Plus I can't get anything to work.  We got a new TV but my DVR remote randomly activates various features on the TV, sometimes it will change the volume, channel or menu.  I ended up cancelling the new hosting and sticking with where I've been for the past 10 yrs.  I don't know if I'm going to be switching to WordPress right now, that's not going very smoothly either and I'm so busy I just get frustrated and end up getting nothing done.  So, until school and ball season are over I won't be making any major changes.  Hopefully later today I'll get some reviews and giveaways up, if not today then definitely this weekend so stay tuned.

Changes comming to Hot Mom Tips

I'm very excited to announce a number of changes coming to Hot Mom Tips.  First off we're changing hosting and moving to WordPress.  I'm really excited about this because it will allow for some really cool features.  The downside is the domain hotmomtips.com may not work for a day or two as we make our move.  After the move we'll be announcing more changes including a new rating system so stay tuned!

My Thoughts on the Looming Government Shutdown

I am tired of this so called "budget" debate which is leading us to a government shutdown.  Make no mistake, this is NOT in any way, shape, or form about the budget.  If it were about the budget the debate would include raising revenue as well as cutting spending and the spending cuts would come from more than just non-defense discretionary spending which is a very small part of the budget.  Also there would be NO policy riders on this budget if it was truly about the money but republicans are insisting on adding on ideological issues like abortion and the environment.   The democrats have consistently moved towards more and more cuts in the budget.  They are now up to $5 billion MORE cuts than the Republicans had originally wanted.  They have given in on the environment which I think is wrong.  They have even agreed to an abortion rider as long as it does not defund other aspects of women's health.  Every time the democrats agree, the republicans add more demands.  This is about one thing, the failure of Obama.  There is only one party that has been cheering, literally cheering for a government shutdown and that is the republican party.  I used to be a republican, but no more.  The party has become one of hate and I cannot support that.

March Madness Giveaway: Dapper Snappers Kids Belts $25 GC Ends 3/20

With three boys my youngest gets a lot of hand-me-downs.  Plus, I do a lot of shopping at garage sales.  Between the two,  half of my 5 year old's pants are too big around the waist.  Not to mention he hit a growth spurt and grew taller but slimmed in the waist.  We just recently potty trained so traditional belts are just an invitation to disaster.  That's why I was so excited to find Dapper Snappers; they are kids belts that only use the back 3 loops!  They're elastic and adjustable so they don't need to be removed for diaper change or trips to the potty.  Simply slip them through the back three loops and snap to size.  With their clips they can even be used without belt loops.

I really love Dapper Snappers and even plan on buying a couple of their Dapper Snappers for Moms for myself!

Dapper Snappers are:

  • Affordable (Find a Retailer near you)
  • Versatile in a wide range of colors for girls belts and boys belts
  • Recommended for ages 9 mo-6 yrs and One Size Fits All
  • Perfect for kids who are in between sizes or wearing hand-me-downs!
  • Convenient – no need to remove for diaper changes & doesn’t impede potty training
  • Made in the USA
  • Mom-invented
  • Compliant with CPSIA regulations. http://www.DapperSnappers.com/safety

Buy It!
Dapper Snappers are available in both boy belts and girl belts, solids and prints.  They have clips for use without belt loops and even belts for women!

Win It!
One lucky Hot Mom Tips reader will receive one $25 GC usable on the Dapper Snapper website.

Ideas That Spark: Smart Living: Cut a Three-Hour Clean to 30 Minutes

From the Editors of Ideas That Spark

By Gail Belsky

If you had two or three hours to spare, you could easily spend it cleaning your kitchen, bathroom and family room. They are the most heavily used rooms in your home, and they get dirty fast. Or you could spend 10 minutes cleaning each one and use the rest of the time for something a lot more fun.
The trick to speedy cleanups is to reduce the amount of products you use and to clean only what needs to be cleaned. Unless you’re fanatical about removing dust bunnies from under the couch, make that a monthly chore. Mop the kitchen floor twice a month instead of every week, and allot an extra 10 minutes for that task. Meanwhile, you can do a quick and effective cleanup -- either all at once or a little each day -- in no time at all.

Kitchen: Get Gleaming
The secret to a speedy kitchen cleanup is one of the cheapest products around: plain old vinegar. Either white or cider vinegar on a paper towel can clean and shine the sink, counter and appliances -- including stainless steel. (Don’t use on marble, however. It can damage the surface.) Before you start, clear off countertop clutter, and load dirty dishes into the dishwasher.
Dirty floor? You should have time for a quick sweep. But if you want to mop up too, cleaning expert Donna Smallin, author of Cleaning Plain and Simple and the One-Minute Cleaner (Storey Publishing), suggests checking out the new Bissell Steam and Sweep: “It leaves the floor clean and dry in a few minutes.”

Bathroom: Spray, Wipe and Go
Step 1: Pour 1/2 cup of bleach into the toilet, and let it sit.
Step 2: Spray the shower walls and door with daily shower cleaner.
Step 3: In the meantime, focus on the countertop, sink and mirror. You’ll only need one product for all three, according to Smallin: glass cleaner. For the mirror, use a rag, not paper towel, to avoid scratches.
Step 4: Return to the toilet. Scrub the bowl and under the rim with a toilet brush, and flush.
Step 5: Use disinfectant wipes for the outside and the seat.
You’re done!

Family/Living Room: Swipe and Sweep
Quickly vacuum the floor and sofa cushions wherever you see crumbs or pet hair. (If you can’t see it, don’t sweat it. You can do a proper sweep-up later on).
Clear off the coffee table, but don’t bother with furniture polish or oil soap. Just dampen a microfiber cloth with water and swipe it over tables, lamps and any other surfaces.
And for easy clutter reduction, Smallin suggests tossing items that belong elsewhere into a laundry basket -- and taking it somewhere else to put away!

Adventures in Cooking: My Attempt at an Easy Kings' Cake

Thank you to P&G’s Have You Tried This Yet? program and Kroger for sponsoring my writing about trying new things and breaking out of my everyday routine. Click here to find great savings on high-performing P&G products at a Kroger store near you. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

Yesterday morning, since it was Mardi Gras and we are originally from Louisiana,  I decided it would be a great idea to take a Kings' Cake to Jordan's preschool class.  Having come up with this idea at the last moment, I knew I wouldn't have time to bake a proper Kings' Cake so I figured I should be able to use refrigerated cinnamon rolls considering they are kind of a cinnamon roll ring anyway.  Because this would be for preschoolers I elected not to include a baby or bean to avoid choking.  I also had to use glitter colored gel because I could not find any purple sugar, and I went to 3 stores!

The cake took 2 cans of refrigerated cinnamon rolls to make.  Opening one can at a time, I unrolled the cinnamon rolls as best I could, this is not as easy as it sounds! I then pinched them together, forming a ring.  The second can I then did the same thing on top.  While I was putting it together I wasn't really sure it was going to work.  It wasn't coming together exactly how I had imagined it would.  Once I got it all pinched together in a ring with most of the cinnamon in the middle, I baked it exactly as it said on the package.  After pulling it out and letting it cool, I iced it with the included icing then drizzled the purple, green, and orange gels (the best substitute I could find for the sugars.)

Once it was decorated I was actually quite impressed.  It may not have been a proper Kings' Cake, but it wasn't bad for a 20 minute "throw" together.  I decided I actually kind of liked the drizzled gels because it looked like the beads that Kings' Cakes are typically draped with.  At any rate, the kids had no idea that it wasn't just right, they didn't know what Mardi Gras is until it was explained, briefly, as to why I had brought them a cake.  All in all I was quite pleased and the cake and the masks I'd brought to go with it were a big hit with Jordan's class.
